Bill (Willie) Stevens was a Gosport boy, a former pupil of Wellington College, and first played for Gosport & Fareham in the 1950s. He was 1st XV Captain and Club Captain at Gosport 1971-72.


Willie was first capped in the centre by Hampshire in 1959 from US where he was the regular full back. 


He had another two caps in 62/63 & two more in 63/64 out of US (three as a wing, one as fullback) then in 64/65 when he was at Blackheath he had another at full back and another at wing. 


His last match for Hampshire came in as full back in Nov 767 when he was still at Blackheath.


Willie use to broadcast on local radio from Burnaby Road.


He served in the Royal Hampshire Regiment and later in the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force and the TAVR, which led to his reaching the rank of Colonel and being awarded an OBE.


For many years he has been a Vice-President of Gosport & Fareham RFC and he regularly attended the annual Past Captains’ Lunch.


Bill Steven's funeral is to be a private family service.

A Thanksgiving Service has been arranged to take place at St John the Baptist Church, Shedfield, Hampshire SO32 2HY on Tuesday 10 March at 2 p.m. which is open to all who wish to attend.

Attendees are asked to wear bright colours and red socks.
